Sealants are a great option to prevent tooth decay. How does reducing the chance of a cavity forming on a molar by 80% sound? That is how well sealants perform according to ADA studies. Those are pretty impressive results! Sealants work by coating the chewing surface of molars with a unique material that prevents bacteria from getting to the tooth's enamel by acting as a physical barrier. The material used to cover the top of the molar is transparent so that the dentist can observe and address any changes that might happen under the sealant before it becomes a problem.
In some instances, when decay is caught in the early stages, it can be removed, and a sealant placed over the area to stop the erosion in its tracks and prevent a cavity from forming that is large enough to require a filling. Anytime you can limit the damage caused by decay, that’s a huge win!
Routine dentist appointments are scheduled in the time frame recommended by the dentist according to the patient’s oral health needs. It’s essential to keep these regular appointments so the need for interventions, like sealants, is identified and implemented at the appropriate time to maximize the patient’s benefit.
